Shakespeare takes us to the fantasy world of “Illyria,” where we allow him the license to practice his art in comic make-believe. Characters eavesdrop on others, disguise themselves, mistake one another’s identities, fall in love at first sight and fall out again.
In Twelfth Night, most of the characters are “in love,” busy wooing or being wooed in a variety of ways and with various degrees of affection.
The pattern they weave illuminates, sometimes ludicrously, sometimes wistfully, the universal human comedy.
Shakespeare wrote every kind of comedy: farce, burlesque, tragicomedy, romantic comedy. Twelfth Night is a fine example of this last kind of comedy, which has been variously described as “golden,” “musical,” “sunny,” and happy comedy.
